WHERE DO I GO FROM HERE?
3 Literary Agents, 3 Opinions

Fall Workshop: November 13, 2011

You have written a manuscript for a children's book that you are excited about. You would love to get it published, and your friends and family encourage you to try.

It is a tantalizing idea, and so you begin to research publication. You read that you need an agent. You hear that you don't need an agent. Someone suggests that you self-publish. However, someone else says that if you self publish you will end up with a garage full of unsold books. A member of your writing group says that it is common to wait six months to a year before hearing from an editor. Someone else suggests that you take a workshop on how to write a query letter.

The advice comes thick and fast and is totally confusing.

You took the first step—you wrote your manuscript—but where do you go from here?

We think we can help. We are three literary agents (Andrea Cascardi of Transatlantic Literary Agency, Anna Olswanger of Liza Dawson Associates, and Ann Tobias of A Literary Agency for Children's Books) who specialize in children's books and who are in daily touch with our clients and their publishers. We have devised a workshop called Where Do I Go From Here?: 3 Literary Agents, 3 Opinions.

We offer this one-day workshop to help those who are trying to make sense of the publishing world. The day will include discussions of attendees' partial manuscripts (which will be sent to the 3 Agents in advance of the workshop) and a general Q&A session. We will also cover such topics as the search for an agent/and or publisher, marketplace considerations, writing tips and critique groups.

This workshop will offer a unique opportunity for participants to see first hand the perspectives of three different agents on the same manuscript, on publishing in general, and on the thinking we each bring to the world of agenting children's and YA books.

Undoubtedly, our approaches and considerations will vary, promising an interesting and—we hope—thought-provoking experience for each attendee. While we cannot guarantee publication, we can bring much-needed clarity to those who have written a manuscript and are searching for the next step in becoming a published author.
